Brooklyn Nets v Toronto Raptors

Marc Gasol is set to make his second appearance as a Raptor on Monday when the Brooklyn Nets (29-28) visit the Toronto Raptors (41-16). The series is split 1-1 between these two teams, with each team getting a home win against the other previously this season.

Toronto Raptors

Toronto returns home after a 3-0 road trip, knocking off the 76ers, Hawks, and Knicks in the last six days. The Raptors are second in the Eastern Conference, and are tied with the Milwaukee Bucks at 41 for most wins in the NBA this season. Despite their success, Toronto has continued to build their team this season, adding 10 year veteran center Marc Gasol. Gasol was averaging 15.6 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 4.6 assists in 54 games for the Grizzlies this season, and makes the Raptors into one of the most dangerous teams in the Eastern Conference. With Gasol, the Raptors add yet another dimension to their offense. Gasol gives the Raptors the ability to run a more direct half court offense, with Gasol acting as the focal point. The Raptors will give Gasol countless touches at the elbow, allowing the big man to either shoot a high percentage elbow jumper, or draw defenders and kick to a perimeter player. The Raptors were previously playing a transition-heavy style with Serge Ibaka and Pascal Siakam as the starting frontcourt. Look for Raptors coach Nick Nurse to find ways to implement Gasol into the lineup as the Raptors ready themselves for the postseason.

The Raptors have won four games in a row heading into the matchup with Brooklyn Monday, and have went 7-3 in their last 10 games. Toronto has remained one of the best home teams all season, going 22-5 in home games this season, 4-1 in their last five.

Toronto Raptors Expected Lineup
Fred Van Vleet, Danny Green, Kawhi Leonard, Pascal Siakam, Serge Ibaka

Brooklyn Nets

Coming off of a tough home loss against the Chicago Bulls, the Nets look to bounce back and sustain their playoff bound pace they’ve set for themselves this season. Behind the point guard play of D’Angelo Russell, the Nets are sitting in 6th place in the east, 1 game ahead of the Hornets in the standings. Young role players have played a huge part in the small amount of success the Nets have had this year, such as sharpshooting Joe Harris, or the athletic physicality offered by Jarrett Allen. Harris, a 5th year forward out of Virginia has lit it up from deep this season, shooting 5.1 three pointers per game, and hitting 45% of them, ranking him 4th in the NBA. Jarrett Allen, 2nd year guard out of Texas, has been an impact player this season, blocking 1.5 shots per game, 13th best in the NBA. These young players improve with each game, making the Nets a team to watch for in the future from the Eastern Conference.

The Nets have struggled as of late, going 5-5 in their last 10 games, winning just two of their last 7. Brooklyn is under .500% away from home this season, going 12-15 overall, and 2-3 in their last 5 games away from home.

Our Verdict and Best Bets

With the race for the playoffs heating up, both of these teams have plenty to play for. The Raptors will be gunning for the top spot in the Eastern Conference, and currently trail the Milwaukee Bucks by a game. On the other side of the east, the Nets will be looking to lock in their spot in the postseason as they cling to a one game lead over the 7th place Charlotte Hornets, and 2 games ahead of the 8th place Miami Heat. The Nets are coming off one of the worst losses of their season, and this will likely motivate them on Monday. Look for a close game, with the Nets keeping the game competitive and within the point spread.

Point Spread, Raptors -10.5 @ 1.90 (10/11) with William Hill.
