LA Lakers v Philadelphia 76ers

Philadelphia 76ers

Coming into the season, the 76ers were expected to make some noise in the Eastern Conference. Flash forward to today, and expectations in Philadelphia have completely changed. 76ers GM Elton Brand and the Philadelphia front office have been busy this season, making huge moves for huge talents, leading many to believe that this 76ers team could fight for a title. First, the 76ers were able to take advantage of a unsettled Jimmy Butler, plucking him from the Timberwolves, and trading away minimal assets in the process. The next move came just days ago, when Philly made a move for Tobias Harris. Harris, who was averaging 20.1 points and 7.9 rebounds for the Clippers before the trade, has turned the 76ers into a contender this season. The new look 76ers won their first game over the second ranked team in the Western Conference in the Denver Nuggets, and will look to continue the winning ways against an up and down Lakers squad.

Philadelphia will be looking to get some momentum going after a very active trade period. The 76ers are 6-4 in their last 10 games, and have a home record of 22-6 this season, going 3-2 in their last five. Philly has found success against the west this season, going 15-6 against western conference competition.

LA Lakers

After drawing a blank on the Anthony Davis trade attempt, the Lakers put themselves in a difficult position. Almost half of this Lakers roster was listed up for trade, and with the trade falling through, morale in the LA locker room will be questionable at best. LA is in 10th place in the west, 1.5 games out of playoff qualification. With just 27 games left in this season, a playoff run from LeBron and the Lakers is becoming more and more unlikely. The Kings, who are currently ahead of the Lakers, improved during the trade deadline, and look like the favorites to move into the 8th and final playoff spot in the west. If the Lakers are going to have any shot at postseason ball this year, LeBron and company need to start pulling off the big wins, starting with the matchup against the 76ers in Philly on Sunday.

The trade rumors surrounding LA seems to have made an effect on their performance. The Lakers have won just 3 of their last 9 games, and have went 4-6 in the last 10. On the road, LA is 12-15 this season, recording a 2-3 record in their last 5 away from home. Eastern Conference competition has been a challenge for LA as well, with the Lakers going 9-9 against east this season.

Key Matchup To Watch

Jimmy Butler v. Kyle Kuzma

With LeBron still playing under 100% while he nurses his groin back to health, Kyle Kuzma needs to pick up the slack. Kuzma is averaging 18.7 points per game this season, and is coming off of a 25 point outing in Boston. Kuzma will matchup with Jimmy Butler on Sunday. Butler has been solid for Philly this season, averaging 19.5 points and 2.1 steals per game. The addition of Tobias Harris will free up Butler that much more on the offensive end, with a matchup against Kyle Kuzma looking like a breakout offensive game for Butler.

Our Verdict and Best Bets

Fueled by home court advantage and the momentum from the acquisition of Tobias Harris, this 76ers side has the potential to make this matchup with the Lakers a blowout. Philadelphia will be able to run their offense through Joel Embiid all night, with the lack of a physical presence down low for the Lakers allowing Embiid to dominate. Embiid getting a lot of touches means that he will be able to facilitate to the high level of scoring talent on the 76ers team, opening up Jimmy Butler and Tobias Harris on the offensive end.

Point Spread, Philadelphia 76ers -7 @ 2.00 (evens) with Unibet.
