Barcelona v Lyon

Barcelona return home to play the second leg of their Champions League fixture with French side Lyon.

Barcelona have bossed all of the competitions they have been in this season, with the Champions League being no exception. Barca is undefeated in the competition so far, and has dominated nearly every game. The Spanish giants have led the Champions League in percentage of possession of the ball, controlling the ball for 63.9% of time in Champions League games. Barca have also been responsible for the most shots in the tournament so far, averaging 15.7 shots per game. This is indicative of the style of play that Barcelona executes, and the ability of Leo Messi. The little magician is at it again this season, leading all of Europe in scoring. Messi is Barca’s leading scorer in the Champions League, scoring six goals in seven games so far. Messi will be looking to add to his 106 career Champions League goals on Wednesday, with a chance to propel his side into the quarterfinals.

Barca is in fine form ahead of their second leg fixture, going 4-1-1 in their last five games across all competitions. Barcelona have yet to lose at the Camp Nou in the Champions League this season, recording an unbeaten record of 2-1-0. In their last five home games, Barca have a record of 2-2-1.

Lyon enter the second leg of their round-of-16 tie with Barcelona with a decent chance of moving on to the next round. Their first leg performance at home was a great defensive performance. Lyon was able to stifle Messi and Suarez, keeping the clean sheet on the big occasion. The French side will have to play Barca away for the second leg of this tie, but don’t count Lyon out so fast. Lyon has dangerous players in their side, and have proven that they have the ability to come up with the big results. Lyon are the only team in Ligue 1 to defeat PSG this season, taking all three points off of the leaders of the French league just over a month ago. Moussa Dembélé scored a goal on that day, and is the player that Lyon will look to going forward. The 22-year-old striker has been Lyon’s most prolific goal scorer this season, netting 14 goals across all competitions this season. The youngster is coming off of a two-goal performance just days ago, his 10th and 11th league goals of the season. Look for Dembélé to give Barca defenders something to worry about in the big fixture at the Camp Nou on Wednesday.

Lyon have performed well leading up to their second leg fixture, going 3-2-1 in their last six matches. The French side has found it difficult to earn results on the road in the Champions League this season, going 1-2-0 so far. In their last five away matches across all competitions, Lyon is 2-1-2.

Our Verdict and Best Bets

One of the most interesting matchups of the round-of-16 is Lyon versus Barcelona. With the first leg ending 0-0, there’s a chance for Lyon to knock out Messi and Barca. Things would be exceptionally interesting if Lyon was able to nab an away goal in this one, forcing Barcelona to get a win, with the away goal rule in effect. It will be a huge task to shut out Messi and Suarez in another game, especially considering this fixture takes place at the Camp Nou. Expect the seasoned attacking line of Barca to be ruthless and clinical with a trip to the quarterfinals on the line. We’re taking Barcelona by two goals in this one, with Messi getting on the scoresheet at least once.
