Bayern Munich v Liverpool

Liverpool FC and FC Bayern Munich square off in the second leg of the Round of 16 Champions League tie. The first match at Anfield ended 0-0, leaving it all to play for in the reverse fixture at the Allianz Arena in Munich.

Bayern Munich

After a slow start to the season, Bayern Munich has sprung back to life in the past few months, losing just one game since the start of 2019. The German giants are undefeated in the Champions League so far, going 4-3-0 in seven tournament matches. Bayern has benefitted from the relentless goalscoring of striker Robert Lewandowski. The Polish international has been in fine form for Bayern in the Champions League, scoring eight goals in just seven matches. He’s continued this form in the Bundesliga, where he has scored a league-leading 17 goals. Lewandowski has scored four goals in his last two games, posing a huge threat in this round of 16 tie with Liverpool. Look for Lewandowski to put away any chances he is gifted on Wednesday as he leads the line for Munich in the biggest game of their season.

There are few hotter teams in world football than Bayern Munich. The German side has won 13 of their last 15 matches, going 13-1-1 over the span. Bayern has been just prolific at home this season, only losing once in 16 matches at the Allianz Arena in all competitions this season. Bayern is 5-0-0 at home in their last five home matches, outscoring opponents 13-2 over the five game span.

Liverpool

Liverpool enter the second leg with a solid chance at moving on to the quarter-finals again this season. The Reds played well in a defensive stalemate at home in the first leg, tying Bayern Munich in a scoreless draw. The result sets up Liverpool well, as any away goal would immensely boost their chances of advancing. Two players who are the most likely to get on the scoresheet for Liverpool are forwards Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah. Both players have notched double digit goal tallies in the league, with Saleh netting 17, and Mane right behind him with 16 goals of his own. Mane, especially, has been in great goal scoring form leading up to the big fixture in Munich. The forward has scored four goals in his last three matches, including a brace his last time out against Burnley. The winger will have to stay consistent, as Bayern is likely to have him matched up with world class defender Joshua Kimmich. It is sure to be a battle of the best of the best on Wednesday when Mane and Salah clash with the stingy Bayern Munich defense in this decisive Champions League matchup.

Liverpool have been in terrific form leading up to their clash in Munich, putting up an unbeaten record of 5-5-0 in their last 10 matches. Liverpool has been strong defensively, only coinciding seven goals in the 10 game span. If there is one weakness in this Liverpool side, it is their away form in the Champions League. The Reds are 0-0-3 away from home in the Champions League so far, losing each one of their away group matches. Liverpool have almost replicated this questionable away form in their last five away games, going 1-3-1 across all competitions.

Key Points

  • Bayern have kept a clean sheet in three of their last four matches, outscoring opponents 12-1 in that span
  • Liverpool have allowed just two goals in their last seven matches across all competitions

Our Verdict and Best Bets

The second leg of this monster fixture will see the winner move on to the quarter-finals after the first leg ended in a scoreless draw. This match has the potential to go another 90 minutes without a goal as well. Despite all of the attacking prowess on the pitch, Liverpool and Bayern Munich have been nearly impossible to score on as of late. Both teams have piled up the clean sheets over the past few matches. Liverpool, led by Virgil van Dyke, has given up just two goals in their last six matches. Bayern Munich’s defense, anchored by Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng, have conceded just once in their last four matches, recording three clean sheets. It will take a special attacking effort to score on either of these two sides, but we are giving the edge to the home team, with Bayern Munich projected to get a 1-0 in the second leg of this fixture, moving them on to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
