Juventus v Atletico Madrid

The Champions League has once again proved to us all what a thoroughly entertaining competition this really is. With the holders Real Madrid and PSG both out, the rest of the teams remaining will now take comfort that the competition is now wide open.

So far in their UCL campaign the form of Juventus has been somewhat erratic. With superstar Cristiano Ronaldo in the ranks, most would have predicted Juventus to be at least making the final this year, although looking at their form in Europe, they’re lucky to still be here. Furthermore they’re in the less favourable position now of trailing Atletico Madrid by two goals.

In complete contrast however is the Serie A table, where Juventus remain undefeated this season with 24 wins and 3 draws across 27 league games played. New signing Ronaldo occupying 2nd place of the Serie A top goalscorers list with 19 goals and 8 assists. The Portuguese has also taken the most chances with 118 shots so far this season in the league. Confidence will be high in Ronaldo from the Juventus fans who know all too well that he himself is highly capable of putting three goals past Madrid.

Both sides are no strangers to having their matches end as a draw at half time, and given the quality both teams possess this could well be a factor in tonight’s game also.

Atletico Madrid

Step aside Real, and enter Atletico to the Round of 16. Not only have they progressed further than their local rivals, they’re also currently sitting 5 points above Real in La Liga in 2nd place. However their goals scored tally in the league could be better sitting at 29, compared with Real Madrid (47) and Barcelona (69). The same could be said for their Champions League campaign too, especially if they are to progress and face a team like free scoring Man City for instance. With this in mind though, Atletico Madrid are looking strong this season, and should be considered one of the front runners to reach the final this year.

Diego Simeone has proven himself to be a phenomenal manager at Atletico, and also a loyal one. Since joining as manager in 2011, he’s guided Atletico to a league title, winning the Copa del Rey, two time Europa League winners and two time Champions League runners up. The list goes on with more club honours too. The impressive Argentine now takes a two goal lead to Turin in the hope of progressing to the quarter finals.

We touched earlier on Madrid’s goals scored tally, but for this encounter in particular a stat to take note of is that they currently hold the goals against record this season having only conceded 17 goals highlighting their strong defence, something that Atletico will be looking to make the primary focus of their strategy this evening to protect their lead. Still though, they will of course be gunning for that all important away goal, something that Juventus failed to capitalise on last time around in the first leg.

Our Verdict and Best Bets

Excitement awaits in this fixture, and could we possibly be in for a similar story to that of which we witnessed in the PSG v Man Utd match. Even though we would expect Atletico to protect their lead from the outset, they are a team that handle pressure well so we would not be surprised to see a goal on the counter attack from Simeone’s men. Juventus of course need to come out of the traps running, so we’re favouring a both teams to score outcome here, with Madrid to emerge overall winners across the two legs.
