Man City v Schalke

Red-hot Manchester City look to take care of their Round-of-16 tie with FC Schalke on Tuesday. City won the away fixture 3-2, putting themselves in a favorable position to advance to the Quarter-finals again this season.

Man City

City is flying high again. Last year’s Premier League champs have ascended to the top of their domestic table again this season, and have put themselves in a good position to advance in the Champions League as well. City did well to get themselves in such a good position, scoring two late goals with 10 men in the first leg match against FC Schalke 04, getting the 3-2 win. The result makes it very difficult for their German opposition, who will have to keep the City front line at bay, a task that is rarely completed. City’s line will likely be led by Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling, two players who have scored a combined 14 goals in the last nine games. Both players netted a goal in the first leg, and will be even more inclined to do so again at the Etihad on Tuesday.

There aren’t too many teams more in-form than Manchester CIty at the moment. Pep has his squad rolling, winning nine matches in a row across all competitions. City has recorded five clean sheets over the nine game win streak, two of which came at home. Manchester City has been a solid home team in the Champions League as well, going 2-0-1 in three matches so far. In their last five home games across all competitions, City is 5-0-0, outscoring opponents 13-2 over the span of matches.

Schalke

It’s all gone wrong for FC Schalke 04 this season. Not only are they trailing heading into the second leg of their Champions League tie, but they are also struggling domestically. The German side is currently sitting in 14th place in the Bundesliga, just four points off of the relegation zone. Schalke 04 has lost 14 of their 25 league matches, including dropping the last three in a row, going without a win in the Bundesliga since January 20th. The misery continued in their last fixture, where they gave up four goals in a road loss to Werder Bremen.

Despite the poor results, it could all be rectified with a big results in Manchester on Tuesday. The challenge is a big one, as the German side will have to overcome a one goal deficit. Not only that, but City went on to score three away goals in the first leg, creating yet another hurdle to get over. That being said, Schalke 04 played well in the first leg against City, and even took a lead into halftime, up 2-1. Schalke 04 was unable to protect the lead, giving up two goals after the 85th minute, capitulating in the worst way possible.

FC Schalke 04 has been out of form heading into Tuesday’s fixture. The German side is 0-1-5 in their last six competitions across all competitions, giving up 17 goals over the winless span. Schalke 04 has been an average away team in the Champions League this season, going 1-1-1 in three away matches in the competition. Across all competitions, FC Schalke 04 has gone 1-1-3 in their last five away matches.

Key Points

  • Manchester City has scored first in nine of their last 10 matches across all competitions
  • FC Schalke 04 has lost four games in a row leading up to Tuesday’s UCL fixture
  • FC Schalke has only scored 27 goals in Bundesliga action this season, the fourth lowest in the German top flight
  • Manchester City has 53 home goals in 16 league matches this season, the most in the English Premier League

Our Verdict and Best Bets

City return home with a one goal lead, but will be playing opposition with nothing to lose. This matchup looks to promise a wide open game in this one, with City likely to be the aggressors at home. Pep Guardiola is not one to set his team in a defensive shape, and will be going for the kill-shot early against FC Schalke 04. Look for little resistance from the Bundesliga side, as they have struggled to find any kind of form leading up to this second leg fixture. Expect City end this fixture early, netting a couple first half goals, and winning this one big, earning them a place in the Champions League Quarter-finals.
