Chelsea v West Ham

After Arsenal dropped points on Sunday, the door has opened for Chelsea to sneak into the top four. The Blues will host unpredictable West Ham in a pivotal game at Stamford Bridge with big Champions League qualification implications.

Chelsea

Despite the naysayers, Chelsea has hung around the top four all season, and has now been presented a chance to jump into one of the European qualification spots. With a winnable Europa League game on Thursday, it is safe to expect a strong starting side for Chelsea. This is a golden opportunity for The Blues, making it the perfect stage for Eden Hazard. Chelsea’s maestro is putting together one of his best seasons of his career, leading the Premier League with 15 assists to go with his 12 goals. Hazard scored and assisted in Chelsea’s last game against Brighton, and will have a heavy influence against the feeble West Ham defense.

The Blues are in decent form ahead of the key clash against West Ham. Chelsea has a 4-1-1 record in their last six matches across all competitions. In their last league match, Chelsea easily handled Brighton, beating the seagulls 3-0 at home. Stamford bridge has become somewhat of a fortress for Chelsea this season. The Blues have lost just once in 16 games, going 10-5-1 and taking 35 points from a possible 48.

West Ham

The Hammers visit Chelsea on Monday in a difficult away fixture. West Ham are wrapping up a so-so season yet again this season. Manager Manuel Pellegrini has his side in 11th place in the league, but struggling to build any sort of momentum. West Ham have failed to win back-to-back matches since mid-January, and the lineup has been just as inconsistent. It seems as if Pellegrini still does not know his best XI, even after 32 games. The striking role has been shared by a number of attackers, but no player has stepped up and claimed the role as his own. Lucas Perez, Andy Carroll, Marko Arnautovic, and Javier Hernandez have all shared time at the top of the attack, but none of the strikers have hit the double digit mark in scoring. In fact, no West Ham player has been able to net 10+ goals in the Premier League this season, revealing their deficiency in the goal department. West Ham has scored just 14 goals in 15 away matches, a stat that will cause concern for Hammers fans leading up to their fixture at Stamford Bridge on Monday.

West Ham have been up and down lately, and have a 3-0-3 record in their last five matches. Their last time out, West Ham was shut out at home against Everton. The Hammers have had struggles away from home this season, posting a 4-3-8 record, taking 15 points from a possible 45 in 15 road games.

Our Verdict and Best Bets

This London Derby between Chelsea and West Ham looks like a fascinating matchup. Chelsea, incentivised by a top four spot, will be up for the big home match. West Ham have the attackers to hang with Chelsea, but the defensive unit for The Hammers has been inconsistent. West Ham has conceded at least two goals in each of their last two games, and we expect this trend to continue. Bettors should consider placing a wager on the OVER on Monday’s game. With the line coming in at three goals, a push looks like the worst case-scenario for anyone taking the over, as Chelsea will be going for a big win at home.
