Manchester United are verging on a Premier League finish outside of the Champions League qualification places. The Devils finished second last term, but have fallen down the pecking order in the league and sit sixth after 33 matches.
Reports have swirled that Manchester United will see a host of top stars leave in the summer. In addition, rumours have circulated that the club will follow Liverpool’s lead in scouting and recruitment.
Manchester United are in desperate need of new recruits and players that can return the club to the heights they previous soared. Here is a look at some of the players manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could sign to rebuild the club.
Kalidou Koulibaly could break the bank for Manchester United if they pursue his signature from Napoli. The centre-back would be an upgrade to some of Solskjaer’s options, but that isn’t to say Koulibaly would be the best option.
Against Arsenal in the Europa League and Liverpool in the Champions League group stage, Koulibaly was taken advantage of during the game by fleet-footed players. Although he is strong in the air, good at set pieces, and a tough tackler, the £110 million it will take to sign him may be better off spent elsewhere.
The funny thing about the English media is they link top clubs to brilliant players who are already at the top of their game with other teams.
Saul Niguez is one such player. Saul has been brilliant at Atletico Madrid and is a key member of the squad. A move to Manchester United would be a step backwards, yet that hasn’t prevented him from being linked to the Red Devils.
The midfielder’s transfer value is estimated at £77m. He would be able to replace the outgoing Ander Herrera who failed to agree terms with Manchester United after 18 months of negotiations.
Will Manchester United splurge £75m on Leicester City centre-back Harry Maguire? The defender has been on Manchester United’s radar for some time. But Maguire has his faults just as other defenders at Old Trafford. He isn’t the sure thing that Liverpool found in Virgil van Dijk or Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane.
The biggest issue with signing Maguire from Leicester City is whether the Foxes will sell. Leicester City have had a resurgence under manager Brendan Rodgers since he took over the club in February.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka is expected to arrive at Old Trafford and become the Red Devils’ new right-back. The defender has been brilliant this term for Crystal Palace becoming an integral part of the team.
Wan-Bissaka isn’t just wanted by Manchester United, however. The Red Devils could struggle to pull off a deal as other clubs want to add the £25m rated defender.
According to rumours, Solskjaer will have £200m to rebuild the Red Devils. Last summer, Mourinho was supposed to have a large warchest as well, yet only three players were brought in. Will this summer be any different?
