Southampton v Liverpool

Liverpool and Southampton square off in Premier League action on Friday. The Reds have yet another chance to go top of the Premier League table, while Southampton will be looking to put some distance between themselves and the relegation zone.

Southampton

The comeback in the Premier League is on for Southampton. The Saints have had an all around lackluster season, but have bounced back strong in their last two fixtures, taking three points off of both Tottenham and Brighton. The results were much needed, and have helped the club get out of significant relegation danger. Southampton has collected just 33 points in the league so far this season, and currently occupies the 16th place position. With 18th place Cardiff City on 28 points, The Saints will want at least a draw from Friday’s matchup with Liverpool. Southampton was shut out of the reverse fixture i at Anfield this season, losing 3-0 back in September. In fact, Southampton hasn’t even scored on Liverpool in a Premier League fixture since March of 2016. Don’t be surprised if Southampton is unable to reverse this trend on Friday in a difficult game against Premier League challenging Liverpool.

The Saints have won their last two Premier League matches, and have a record of 3-0-3 in their last six. Southampton has been poor at home for a majority of this season, going 4-6-5 in 15 matches at St. Mary’s Stadium, winning only 18 points. In their last five home games, The Saints have a solid record of 3-1-1, including big wins over Everton and Tottenham.

Liverpool

Liverpool start the Premier League matchweek early this week when they travel to St. Mary’s Stadium to take on Southampton. The game is a must-win for Liverpool, who are just one point behind Manchester City in the race for the title. With City out of Premier League action until April 14th, the pressure is on the Reds to come home with nothing less than three points. Friday’s away game comes at crunchtime for Liverpool, who are also trying to prepare for their Champions League fixture with Porto on Tuesday of next week. Expect nothing less than Liverpool’s strongest squad against Southampton, which will include the double-digit scoring trio of Firmino, Mane, and Salah. The three forwards have scored a combined 46 goals for Liverpool this season, and have been responsible for consistently provided the creativity and aggression going forward. Look for one or two of these players to get themselves a goal or two on Friday as Liverpool look to retake their lead on the Premier League title race.

Liverpool has performed well as of late, going undefeated in their last six matches with a 4-2-0 record across all competitions. The Reds have been the best away team in the Premier League this season, and has a record of 10-5-1 in 16 games away from Anfield, taking 35 points from a possible 48. In their last five away games, Liverpool is 2-3-0, including two scoreless draws against Manchester United and Everton.

Our Verdict and Best Bets

Liverpool visits Southampton on Friday in what appears to be a straightforward task for Liverpool. The Reds will be settling for nothing less than three points, and will have to take on a fairly in-form home side in Southampton to get it. The Saints have played well at home in recent weeks, and are coming off of their performance of the season in their last home game, beating Tottenham 2-1. Even though Liverpool will be chasing a big result, bettors should look for a low scoring game in this one. With most sportsbooks posting the over-under at three goals, the under is a good bet, as Southampton will be packed in defensively for a majority of this game. The home team would take a 0-0 in this one, and will be looking to counter to get their goal.
