Atlanta United v Orlando City

Atlanta United hosts Orlando City in a battle between two slow starting teams in the Eastern Conference of the MLS. Atlanta and Orlando are both currently sitting outside the top seven in the East, but Sunday’s matchup offers a chance for one of these squads to jump as many as three spots in the standings.

Atlanta United

Atlanta United are hunting their fourth consecutive win this weekend when Orlando City comes to town. This dangerous Atlanta side will have to take care of business without one of their young stats. Youngster Ezequiel Barco is set to miss this match and all of United’s matches in the month of May. Barco was called up to play in the U-20 World Cup for Argentina, leaving his position in the left part of midfield open. 24-year-old Hector Villalba is expected to take his place in the starting lineup. Villalba is more than capable of filling in for Barco, as the midfielder is coming off of a strong season in the MLS. Villalba was responsible for 13 goals and nine assists last season, and the midfield will have space to take advantage of on Sunday when Atlanta United host Orlando City. Look for Villalba to have a big impact on this match, as Atlanta United go for a fourth consecutive victory.

Atlanta United have started to find their form heading into their matchup against Orlando City. Atlanta United has won their last three matches in a row, contributing to their 4-0-2 record in their last six matches. Atlanta will play their sixth home game of the season on Sunday. In their first five home matches, Atlanta United has a record of 2-2-1.

Orlando City

It hasn’t been the fasted start for this Orlando City side. This is a team who have struggled to string results together, as they’ve failed to win back-to-back matches so far this season. Led by the 32-year-old Nani, this Orlando side has not quite found their best gear yet this season. Orlando has had problems scoring on the road this season, failing to score more than one goal in any of their matches away from home. Winger Tesho Akindele will have to up his game if Orlando are going to get a result away from home on Sunday. Akindele is the third player in a dangerous front three of Nani and Dwyer. This top three should be banging in the goals in the MLS, but Akindele must provide more prolific finishing for that to happen. Look for this front three to create enough chances to win this match on Sunday, leaving it up to the Orlando City strikers to finish these chances and bring a positive result back to Orlando.

Orlando City has been unable to string together results so far this season. In their previous six matches, Orlando City has went 2-1-3. Orlando City play their fifth away match of the season in Atlanta on Sunday. Orlando City is 1-2-1 in away matches so far this season.

Our Verdict and Best Bets

This match between Atlanta United and Orlando City has the potential to be the game of the weekend in the MLS. Atlanta United has recorded three consecutive clean sheet victories, and has started to look like the dominant team of last year’s season. This home match is an ideal game for Josef Martinez to add to his growing goal tally. After scoring 35 goals last season, Martinez has scored four goals in his first nine games this season. Look for Martinez’s quality to be the difference in this one on Sunday, as Atlanta United look to make it a seventh game in a row without a loss to Orlando City.
