Columbus Crew v Los Angeles FC

After a blistering start winning seven of their first nine games, LAFC (7-3-1) still find themselves as MLS points leaders, sitting atop of the Western Conference. With a mid-week victory, the Columbus Crew (5-6-1) broke one of the worse stretches in club history with five consecutive losses.

Columbus Crew

Columbus hosts the second Los Angeles team for the week and try to make it two for two after a slump busting win. The three goals against the Galaxy can be considered a scoring outbreak of sorts considering they haven’t scored that many in a game since July of last year. A surprise considering the Crew have only managed nine goals all year prior to this match. Gyasi Zardes, Federico Higuaín, and Hector Jiménez were the beneficiaries. A late 87th minute score by the Galaxy caused no harm as the focus now shifts to the other LA team.

In the process, Federico Higuaín attained his 62nd assist with the Crew breaking the club record help by Robert Warzycha. They’ll need more of his magic to overcome the high-octane offense of LAFC.

Los Angeles FC

LAFC has cooled a tad, drawing in their last two matches, at Seattle Sounders and home against the Chicago Fire. The scoreless draw with Chicago saw their six-game home winning streak come to an end, the first time they’ve allowed a point to a home opponent all year. A disappointment considering the Fire came in losers of their previous two matches each by a 1-0 deficit. Back at full strength, Los Angeles dominated possession (64% to 36%) and shots (21 to 9), though failed to open things up in the final third. Hard to do considering Chicago’s compact strategy of two lines of four in front of goalkeeper David Ousted.

With only one goal scored in the previous two games, after 25 goals in their first nine, LAFC looks to get back on the winning track on the road against a reeling Columbus squad that stopped the bleeding with a midweek 3-1 defeat of the LA Galaxy.

Our Verdict and Best Bets

Despite facing the league leaders on short rest, Columbus will be ready to play. While they don’t have the talent to go player for player, they do have the will to win as a team taking the approach of the sum being better than its parts. While a win will be tough, a hard-fought match will certainly be in order.
