DC United v Sporting Kansas City

DC United (6-2-3) attempts to keep up with the Joneses atop the Eastern Conference standings as they host a struggling Sporting Kansas City (2-4-3) squad winless in their last five matches.

DC United

A 3-1 victory at the hands of the Columbus Crew kept DC United even with the Philadelphia Union, leading the East with 20 points. Montreal Impact also joins them with 20 points, though with an extra game played. A Pedro Santos disallowed goal for the Crew was the turning point as DC capitalized with a Luciano Acosta score five minutes later, taking control of the game. Wayne Rooney converted a penalty off a video reviewed handball in first-half stoppage time providing DC all the cushion they would need.

Wobbling of late alternating wins and losses in their past five, DC fortified its defense by adding left back Marquinhos Pedro in a trade with FC Dallas after losing another key defender to injury. With a grade 2 sprain, Donovan Pines joins Joseph Mora and Oniel Fisher on the sidelines. Pedro brings much needed depth to a position hit by the injury bug all season long.

Sporting Kansas City

For Sporting Kansas City, their last win came in March and come in with a striking sense of urgency. Having just ten points to show for their nine games played, they’ll attempt to climb out of the bottom ranks of the Western Conference. An injection of energy comes with the recent acquisition of a former star in a trade with the Colorado Rapids. Benny Feilhaber is back. A player who’s helped this team to five consecutive playoff appearances, an MLS Cup, and two Lamar Hunt U.S. titles before departing. Now 34 years old, Sporting hopes there’s still gas in the tank and will try to revive the magic of old.

Feilhaber will be leaned on to stop the teams seven-game winless slide, a 0-3-2 stretch that has sunk them deep in the trenches. However, they still only sit one game below the playoff line despite everything. They hope to get back to full strength considering last week’s home loss to Atlanta United featured eight players sitting with injuries.

Our Verdict and Best Bets

With both teams hobbled with injury, this one will come down to who steps up and we have to think DC will prevail in front of their home crowd. Bringing Feilhaber back will not be enough in the near term as he’ll need to reacquaint himself if he plays.
