DC United

The first of the original ten franchises to be awarded by Major League Soccer, D.C. United stands as one of the leagues flagship and historic franchises. A franchise that has delivered more championships than any other major professional sports teams in the Washington D.C. area to include four championships, three U.S Open Cup titles, and a CONCACAF title.

D.C. United holds the honor of participating in the first ever MLS game, a 1-0 loss to the San Jose Clash (now Earthquakes) on April 7, 1996. Its first season started slow losing four of first six matches, however a turnaround happened, qualifying for the playoffs and making it through to the MLS Cup finals. Down 0-2 to the LA Galaxy, D.C. victoriously stormed back with a Golden Goal to take the league’s first championship trophy. They would go on to also win the U.S. Open Cup championship, completing the double. A feat not accomplished by a professional American soccer team since 1932.

They repeated in 1997, earning back-to-back MLS Cup championships but this time also taking the Supporters’ Shield in the process. Competing in international competition, D.C. made it all the way to the CONCACAF semifinals before losing to the LA Galaxy and finishing third in the tournament. Although no MLS trophies came in 1998 for the first time, they returned to international play, this time overcoming Mexican Vernao champions Deportivo Toluca for their first and only CONCACAF title. A first for an American club. They earned a second international title shortly after, winning the 1998 Copa Interamericana.

Years of success made a downturn in the early 2000’s, going through a playoff drought that carried them into another dominating stretch beginning in 2004 with another MLS Cup win, their fourth. Back to back Supporters Shield titles in 2006 and 2007, two semifinal CONCACAF finishes in 2007 and 2008, and a 2008 U.S. Open Cup title capped a remarkable run.

Another downturn that hit rock bottom came in 2013, their worse season in club history, winning only three regular season games in 34 tries. However, the bounce back was swift, winning the U.S. Open Cup later that year and coming back to win the Eastern Conference Championship in 2014, leading to more CONCACAF Champions League success. A clean sweep of the group stage matches earned them the top quarterfinal round seed before losing to Costa Rican side Alajuelense on aggregate goals in the knockouts.
