A rivalry showdown that could set the tone in the top of the table in the Western Conference. Portland Timbers trade snow for sun with their visit to the Los Angeles Football Club.
In their home opener, LAFC rallied from a goal down to, winning in stunning fashion on a Adama Diomonde goal deep into stoppage time over Sporting Kansas City. And well deserved it was. With 14 shots and almost 500 passes on the day, LAFC put in a good day’s work overcoming Kansas City’s physical presence. So physical that seven yellows were handed to them including a player ejection.
It wasn’t pretty, but LA handled their business. After falling behind 16 minutes into the game, LAFC answered just after halftime with a Diego Rossi score. After being challenged by coach Bob Bradley to be as good as Messi, forward Carlos Vela was brilliant, dribbling with purpose and showing off his tactical abilities. Bold namedropping, Bob.

Even though they won’t be home, and a tough opponent, Portland Is glad to be in warmer Los Angeles this weekend after the extremes of snow-mageddon in Colorado, the coldest game in MLS history. Weather aside, not being able to overcome a 10-man Rapids team has left a bad taste with the Timbers. They did come out with a tie, nonetheless a disappointing outcome considering having leads on two separate occasions, having a man up for almost an hour, and demoralized with an equalizer in the 94th minute.
Considering the conditions, it’s hard to have any meaningful takeaways from Portland’s overall performance. For what it’s worth, winger Andy Polo seems to be in midseason form, while on the other hand forward Jeremy Ebobisse was MIA. But, the weather. This game against LAFC will provide more of a measuring stick for where Portland is as a team.

Our Verdict and Best Bets
This has the looks of an even matchup. Both teams should get their opportunities, feeling like a draw could be in order. However, give Portland the slight edge if it means one team coming out victorious.
