Minnesota Utd v New York City FC

The pressure continues to rise in week 6 for New York City FC (0-1-4), looking for their first win in a tough road matchup against Minnesota United FC (3-2-0) who get to finally play in their new home.

Minnesota Utd

After five games, the saving grace is they’ve lost only one game. Bouncing back off a 4-0 thrashing to Toronto FC, NYCFC missed out on an opportunity against a shorthanded Montreal Impact at Yankee Stadium, taking another frustrating draw on the season. At this same point last year, New York City was undefeated with 13-points. Today, they sit winless with only 4-points, second to last in the Eastern Conference.

To improve they have to be better in the line between defenders and midfielders. They’re allowing teams to get to Sean Johnson too easily. On the attacking side, with pressure mounting, they’re pressing. The frustration is evident with players trying to do too much, forcing things. It’s important the get back to their culture of passing, allowing the forward pass to develop naturally, implementing the belief that short high-percentage passes will lead to good things further down the chain.

New York City FC

For Minnesota, the wait is finally over. Earning three wins in five road games to start the season, a much-anticipated inaugural home opener in their new park has arrived. Unlike NYCFC, this team is fit and feeling good, ending the road trip with a 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls in New Jersey.

An injury to Miguel Ibarra forced the Loons into a 3-4-3 formation, rather than their usual 4-2-3-1. It worked. Goals in each half was enough to put it away. A team goal finished by Adu Danaldi in the 34th minute gave Minnesota the lead, while Romario Ibarra gave them some breathing room, finding the back of the net in the 50th. The Red Bulls fought and got on back in a minute 70 corner kick. Great goalkeeping form Vito Mannone sealed it.

The cards are just stacked up against NYCFC for any positive result in this match. A new stadium, a home opener with a motivated opponent, and a rabid fanbase await. A tough recipe to overcome.
