New York City FC v LAFC

A tale of two coasts to start the season for these two squads. New York has stumbled out of the gate, trying to find their rhythm, still trying to find some fire power. Los Angeles, complete opposite. Functioning on all cylinders, scoring at will, and looking like a force to be reckoned with, firing six goals in two games.

New York City FC

So far, life after David Villa has not been kind to NYCFC. A disappointing season opening tie in Orlando after being up two goals, followed by a scoreless draw in their home opener has already raised some red flags. While still early, they’ll need to get it together soon or find themselves in deep turmoil. Under coach Domenec Torrent, they’ve yet to settle into an effective playing style, dating back to when he took over for Patrick Vieira.

The club seeks to boost their scoring by searching for a forward to add. Until then they’ll need to work with what they have. They’ve shown flashes of brilliancy and creativity with good play from captain Alexander Ring and Alexandru Mitrita. Nonetheless, finishing has been an issue. With Ring, they have a quiet but respected leader. It’s to be determined if he can lead them to greater heights.

LAFC

Sitting atop the Western Conference with two wins, early season success is shining on LAFC. Handling business with two home games to start the season with a season opening win against Sporting Kansas City (2-1), then dismantling the Portland Timbers (4-1), LAFC hits the road for first time this year.

Carlos Vela has put on a show for Hollywood, contributing to all four goals against Portland with three assists and a goal. Being one of the best players in the MLS right now, Vela hasn’t missed a step, picking up where he left off last season. In 28 games, he put up 14 goals on 13 assists, quickly rising to league MVP status. His play has elevated LAFC to the league’s elite, currently sitting at the top of the MLS Power Rankings scale.

NYCFC have their hands full. A loss to LAFC, which is a very likely scenario, will bring this season closer to crisis mode for the boys in blue. They’ll need to pull out all the stops to prevent this from happening.
