New York City FC v Montreal Impact

In desperate need of a win and a turnaround, the season is quickly unraveling for NYCFC (0-1-3) after a horrendous start to the season. Like New York, Montreal (2-2-0) look to pick themselves off the mat after a 7-1 thrashing at hands of Sporting Kansas City, the worse defeat in their history.

New York City FC

Only one team had been worse than NYCFC in the Eastern Conference standings. Ironically, it’s the champions Atlanta United who arguably are having a worse start to the season. When things are going bad, you look for improvements. Unfortunately for NYCFC, that doesn’t seem to be the case given the simple eye test. The latest humiliation comes at the hand of a 4-0 shellacking in Toronto. A game where they showed absolutely no life and fans calling for the coaches’ head.

It’s extremely evident that without Maxi Moralez, NYCFC has no threats. Missing the Argentinian playmaker, the team could only muster up three uneventful shots on goal. And things are looking bleak with the possibility their No. 10 could miss this game against the Impact. Help may, or may not be on the horizon with the possible infusion of their new Brazilian striker, Heber, who signed with the club in late March and has yet to make his debut. With a full week of training, coach Domènec Torrent has implied there’s a chance we see their new offensive asset this weekend at Yankee Stadium, though it may not be in the starting lineup. Offensively, they’ve only scored four goals on the season as a team, they can certainly use the help.

Montreal Impact

Montreal will also try to erase the nightmare of a blowout loss, resulting in a players only meeting after practice on Tuesday. Missing their biggest threat, Ignacio Piatti, along with defender Zakaria Diallo on a one-game suspension, the stage was set. To make matters worse, Piatti’s replacement, winger Harry Novillo, never made it to Kansas City due to a missing passport. It meant placing players out of position leading to disorganized play. Montreal will again be shorthanded without their star midfielder, Piatti for the tussle in the Bronx.

Our Verdict and Best Bets

Looking for their first win of the season, NYCFC seems to be the more desperate of these two teams. Both are missing their top playmakers, thus others will need to step up on either side. With pressure building, NYCFC may finally get in the win column.
