NYC FC v DC United

NYCFC hopes to put their infuriating tie against Orlando City SC behind them as they host a DC United team riding high off a win against the champions.

Life without David Villa started off great for NYC, getting off to a two-goal lead against a rebuilding Orlando squad. Goals from Ebenezer Ofori in the 13th minute and Alex Ring in the 45th minute had them sitting pretty going into halftime. A win to begin the season appeared to be a forgone conclusion. Then came the second half. Orlando City forward Chris Mueller brought the home team within one score in the 59th minute. Sixteen minutes later, Tesho Akindele leveled it up and that’s how it ended.

New York’s inability to defend the counter-attack and hold possession was eye opening. It’s all a testament to their current lack of tactical form under coach Domènec Torrent. If they allow DC United the same high percentage chances as they did with Orlando City, New York will find themselves on the short side of their home opener against a team coming in with a head of steam.

DC United

In a tough opening game against MLS Champions Atlanta United, no one expected DC United to dominate the way they did. After a scoreless 45 minutes, Paul Arriola broke the tie with assists from Wayne Rooney and Luciano Acosta. Applying pressure and playing aggressively was the key to their 2-0 win, sealed with a Luciana Acosta stunner in the 58th minute. An impressive feat, keeping a clean sheet against last year’s best offense.

Since Wayne Rooney’s arrival, DC has performed as a top tier team, crawling out of the cellar and into the top ranks. For Acosta, he quickly acclimated to his new surroundings since arriving from PSG. With a full season of Wayne Rooney, DC is now poised to challenge the ranks of the Eastern Conference.

Our Verdict and Best Bets

DC comes in hot and possess a huge threat to turn this into an extremely disappointing start to NYCFC’s season. With the home crowd on their side, NYC should hope to squeeze out at least a tie in this one though will not be surprised to see DC win outright unless.
