Toronto FC v DC United

DC United (7-2-3) matches Philadelphia to remain tied for the top spot in the Eastern Conference as Toronto FC (5-1-4) slips in the standings with two straight defeats.

Toronto FC

For Toronto, this recent loss at the hands of Philadelphia sees both Atlanta United and New York City FC leap frogging them in the standings. After starting the season strong with three straight wins, Toronto is 2-4-0 in their last six matches and slipping.

It was a frustrating day for both its back play and play making areas. Philadelphia exposed Toronto in the back and took full advantage of over passing with swift counter-attacks. Add an own goal to the mix and a loss is what you get. The return of Jozy Altidore from hamstring injury generated an Alejandro Pozuelo goal off a free kick, though it wasn’t enough even with the many chances manufactured on offense.

DC United

In a Mother’s Day downpour, DC United overcame the elements with a late Paul Arriola winner on a Wayne Rooney assist to solidify their standing as shared leaders of the conference. A justifiable result considering their dominance throughout the match. Starting off as a highly intense affair with pressing, tackles, and collisions on both sides, DC’s dominance slowly took shape as the game progressed.

But given their dominance, it was tough finding a way past goalkeeper Tim Melia. With only four substitutes available as a result of a plethora of injuries raining down on Kansas City entering this match, they almost pulled off the much needed point. Two crucial saves early in the game by keeper Bill Hamid kept the game tight and positioned United to take the full three points. With little time to savor the win, they begin a tough road stretch that takes them to Toronto, Houston, then New England, before returning to host Chicago.

Our Verdict and Best Bets

Feeling the pressure to turn things around, expect a Toronto to come out strong and tightening the issues exposed by Philadelphia albeit on a short turnaround. This will be a hard-fought match with DC aspiring to stay at the top of the conference. If Toronto can figure it out quickly, they have a shot to take the three points, however a share of the spoils could be in the cards.
