Real Madrid are about to put one of their worst ever seasons to bed and completely makeover the squad. Manager Zinedine Zidane, who left the club after winning last season’s Champions League before returning in early March, is set to rid the club of underperforming stars in the offseason.
Zidane has already shortlisted a few of the club’s stars who have become complacent in their roles at Real Madrid. The names could surprise fans as it is claimed Zidane is unhappy with the squad he reassumed.
So, which players are set to depart and who could arrive at the Santiago Bernabéu this summer?
Luka Modric set to leave
Luka Modric surprisingly won the Ballon d’Or in 2018 on the back of Real Madrid’s Champions League win and Croatia’s World Cup runner-up finish. Modric has been incredibly poor overall this season, which could be due to fatigue from a long season in 2017-18.
Zidane relied heavily on Modric during Real Madrid’s trio of Champions League wins between 2015 and 2018. But the manager has taken notice of Modric’s declining form and is ready to cut the midfielder loose.
According to reports, Modric is not happy with Zidane and is open to leaving in the offseason. Modric had been linked with a move during the World Cup as Inter Milan were ready to sign him. However, Real Madrid were unwilling to let Modric go which infuriated him.
Zidane has also failed to gel with Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale. It was believed the Welshman would leave the club last summer after starring in the Champions League Final. However, Cristiano Ronaldo’s transfer to Juventus and Zidane’s resignation led to Bale staying. Now, with Zidane back and Bale out of form all season long, Real Madrid are ready to cash-in on him.
Who will join Real Madrid?
Zidane has already outlined players he wants to bring into the club. Manchester United’s Paul Pogba and Tottenham Hotspur’s Christian Eriksen are high on Zidane’s transfer target list. The manager has already met with club president Florentino Perez over signing Pogba and/or Eriksen.
Pogba and Eriksen are not the only names on Zidane’s transfer shortlist. Real Madrid have identified Eintracht Frankfurt striker Luka Jovic as one of their chief targets. Eintracht Frankfurt recently added Jovic on a permanent deal from Benfica. The 21-year-old Serbian was on a two-year loan deal at Eintracht Frankfurt prior to sealing a permanent deal.
Real Madrid are rumoured to be ready to part with £30 million-plus for Jovic. The Serbian has found the back of the net 26 times in all competitions this term.
Possible Pogba deal
Real Madrid and Manchester United could swap Pogba for Bale in the offseason. Manchester United have been keen on signing Bale for the last few seasons and could finally land him with Pogba going the opposite way.
Pogba has been an overall disappointment since arriving at Old Trafford and there are claims the Red Devils are ready to cut their ties with the Frenchman. Like Real Madrid, Manchester United are ready to makeover their squad in the offseason.
Both clubs could find success by swapping players. It will take some cash spending, however, to get back to the levels of their contemporaries.
