There has been endless speculation as to who will get to challenge new Welterweight champ Kamaru Usman first, but a hint may have been sent out on Saturday night. It appears that Masvidal’s performance against young prospect Darren TIll has caught the attention of some very influential individuals in the fight game. Ali Abdelaziz, manager of Usman, was one of these impressed individuals as he took to twitter after the fight.
ESPN’s UFC reporter Brett Okamoto tweeted this just hours after Masvidal’s brutal K.O. of Darren Till, turning heads of UFC followers and fans.
“Just spoke to UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman’s manager Ali Abdelaziz: “We think Jorge Masvidal deserves the next title shot. Not Colby Covington. Colby is a terrible person and doesn’t deserve it. Jorge just knocked out Darren Till like that? He should be next.””
This is in no way guaranteeing a fight between Usman and Masvidal, but it has added yet another worthy name to the list of Welterweights looking for a title shot. With his win over Till, Masvidal adds another notch to his belt. The victory is his 33rd of his career, the most of any UFC welterweight fighters ranked in the top 10.
After Masvidal took out Darren Till, it would appear as if only three fighters have a shot at Usman’s title next. In no order, the three welterweights who will most likely fight Usman next is Colby Covington, Ben Askren, and Jorge Masvidal. Interestingly enough, Covington and Masvidal, two of the most outspoken and aggressive fighters in the UFC, both train with American Top Team. Make sure to keep tabs on the UFC’s welterweight division, as countless juicy storylines are beginning to brew between some of the best fighters on the planet.
