Two of the UFC’s hottest names look like they will meet in the cage this July. Jorge Masvidal and Ben Askren have verbally agreed to fight on the UFC 239 card, taking place in T-Mobile Arena on the 6th of July. The fight is in advanced stages of negotiations, and is expected to be officially announced by the UFC in early April. Masvidal and Askren are expected to fight in the third-to-last fight slot of the night, scheduled before the co-main event between Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes.
Both Masvidal and Askren are coming off of big wins in the octagon. Ben Askren was able to survive a pounding from Robbie Lawler, pulling off a first round submission in his first UFC fight on the UFC 235 card on March 2nd. Askren lived up to his reputation of possessing world class grappling in his first fight, and will look to take advantage of this skill set yet again with Masvidal. Many early previews of this potential matchup see Askren as the favorite, as he will have the wrestling advantage.
Jorge Masvidal is coming off his best performance of his MMA career, knocking out Darren Till in the main event in London, England. Masvidal put Till to sleep in his own country, finding Till with a wicked overhand left, adding a high profile victory to his impressive CV. Masvidal is known for his brawler style, and has tremendous boxing along with above average wrestling and ground game. A matchup against Askren would be challenging for Masvidal, who would be looking to take advantage of his superior hands, and speed advantage.
Although this matchup is not set in stone, it is highly likely that these two will fight this summer. Both fighters are ranked in the top five of the Welterweight Division of the UFC, giving both Masvidal and Askren great incentive to get the win in July. Considering the other fights taking place in the Welterweight division, the winner of Askren v. Masvidal will be the likely opponent for the winner of the next title fight, Covington v. Usman. Make sure to keep tabs on this insane Welterweight division in 2019, as it is shaping up to be one of the most exciting weight classes in the UFC.
